SARNIA, May 30, 2019 – With growing capabilities and expertise to support cannabis-related research, Lambton College has expanded its area of focus to support projects in this emerging industry sector.
Over the last two years, the College has been approached by various businesses looking for project support with the goal of developing new products or processes related to cannabis.
With the success of the College’s Bioindustrial Process Research Centre (BPRC), which is part of the Centre of Excellence in Energy & Bioindustrial Technologies, existing expertise and infrastructure in process design, analytical chemistry, process optimization and material science are readily available to support research in the cannabis area.
As an example of current industrial projects, Lambton College is collaborating with Motif Labs, a Canadian cannabis/hemp extraction and refining company located in Aylmer, Ontario. Motif has a focus on Intellectual Property (IP) generation in the cannabis industry and is examining the ideal methods and process parameters to target terpene (essential oil) extraction from the plant while maximizing efficiency and minimizing degradation. The company’s research in partnership with Lambton is focused on developing and optimizing effective terpene isolation protocols.

Lambton College is committed to continuing to develop partnerships with businesses and organizations that are interested in developing new or improving existing processes and technologies in the cannabis industry. In addition, Lambton is also open to support applied research that is concentrated on the health aspects of cannabis use through its new NOVA Chemicals Health & Research Centre.
Since 2013, the Research & Innovation department has developed and executed more than 600 projects. These projects have resulted in more than 100 new prototypes, 20 pilot plants and 300 new/improved processes, technologies and services. These initiatives have created more than 150 jobs for researchers and 644 contracts for hiring research students to work on projects in collaboration with partner staff.
According to Research Infosource Inc., which released its annual list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges in November, Lambton College is the #1 research college in Canada based on research income.
